In David Uberti’s article “The Real History of Fake News,” he takes the stance that fake news has existed since the press became commercially sensationalized. When needing to reach a broader audience, early newspapers attempted to “charm” audiences and made fact and truth indiscernible. It became a corrupted art to increase newspaper sales. In the modern age with technology and social media, corporations count their “clicks'' and this is how they are influenced. Despite the fact that making money is any corporation's goal, they need to be held accountable for fake news. People should boycott news outlets and demand answers on why they are spreading false information because social media will continue to grow.

Fake news is bad because it misleads people into thinking that something is true, when it is not. News outlets should not be fictional and should provide audiences with information that they can then use to vote, formulate new opinions, or talk about within their communities. According to Statista.com’s “Fake News-Statistics & Facts” and “Share of U.S. population who use social media 2008-2019,” about 70% of Americans use social media but only about 34% trust the news on it. When false information is spread, news outlets should be held accountable because it is dangerous. Social media is not going anywhere and its use has been on the incline. Hopefully that by holding them accountable and giving repercussions for fake news, news outlets will favor unbiased journalism.
